About Us

The Yewdale Hotel is situated in the very centre of Coniston in the heart of the Lake District.  Built of local stone and slate in 1896, it was once part guest house and part bank.  Coniston was voted the UK’s top walking destination in 2009 and therefore the hotel forms an ideal base from which to enjoy the surrounding countryside.  Fishing, sailing, kayaking, cycling and pony trekking are all available on or around Coniston Water and those with energy to spare can tackle the climb up the 2,600’ Old Man of Coniston.  The Ruskin Museum in the village celebrates history of Coniston and famous Victorian artist John Ruskin, and there is the steamboat trip that calls off at various points around the beautiful Lake with its stunning views of the Lakeland fells.

The Pub

The friendly Pub occupies the old banking hall and is decorated with historic pictures taken during the height of Coniston’s slate and copper mining industry at the beginning of the last century.  It is open from 12 noon daily until late and has an excellent cellar offering a choice of local cask ales and as popular brands such as Fosters, Kronenberg and Guiness.  It has a varied wine list and stocks a full range of spirits, alcopops and soft drinks.  There is always a great atmosphere and a warm fire during the winter months with frequent special evenings and a monthly quiz. 

Food

The ground floor has been extended and recently refurbished as a smart Café/Bistro for the use of residents and non-residents open from 8.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner (winter opening times may vary).  There is a breakfast, brunch, and bistro-style menu which includes a wide range of delicious organic and local produce, coffee, tea and cakes.  All meals are freshly cooked on the premises and there is plenty of seating both inside and outside on the south-facing terrace.  Groups and special events are welcome with prior reservation.

Accommodation

There are 9 en suite bedrooms (2 Single, 3 Double, 1 Twin and 3 Family rooms), with TV, free Wi-Fi and tea-making facilities, most with excellent views of the surrounding fells.  Each room provides comfortable and restful accommodation with the feel and charm of a ‘boutique’ hotel.

Parking

Free parking for a limited number of cars is possible on site.  Pre-booking is recommended.
